VDS or Dedicated Server? Which One to Choose

The first question you face when you decide to rent a server is this: a virtual server (VDS) or a dedicated server? Online, the answer is usually brushed off with “it depends on your needs.” We won’t brush it off here: we’ll tell you exactly which is right in which situation, with reasons and with numbers.

The core difference: sharing

This is the only real difference; everything else follows from it.

On a dedicated server an entire machine is yours. Processor, memory, disk — all of it runs only your workload. There is no one else on the machine.

On a virtual server a powerful physical machine is split among several customers through a virtualisation layer. The resources allocated to you are guaranteed, but the whole machine is not yours.

Three practical consequences follow from this distinction:

Where the prices cross

The real decision is made here, and most guides skip this part.

Virtual server plans start small and grow upward. Dedicated servers cannot go below a certain base cost — because there is a real machine involved. The two cross at a certain point.

Let’s make it concrete with our own prices:

Notice: around 2,000₺ the two worlds cross. For the same money you get either a virtual server with 20 vCPU and 64 GB of memory, or a physical machine with 8 real cores and 16 GB of memory.

On paper the virtual server looks far more generous. But that comparison is misleading, because a vCPU and a physical core are not the same thing. A vCPU is a time slice of a physical core. If your load spikes in short bursts and then goes idle, 20 vCPU really do behave like 20 cores. If your load runs at full capacity without pause, 8 real cores give more consistent results than 20 shared vCPU.

In short, in this price range the decision is made not by the numbers, but by the character of your load.

Choose a virtual server if…

Your load is variable. Websites, e-commerce, corporate sites, API services. Intensity changes through the day and is near-idle at night. The shared model is designed for exactly this profile.

Budget is the deciding factor. You can start at 117₺ and upgrade the plan as your business grows. A dedicated server has no such entry point.

You don’t know how much resource you need. If you’re renting a server for the first time, you only learn your real needs after running it. On a virtual server a wrong guess is a cheap mistake; you just upgrade the plan. On a dedicated server the same mistake means months of overpaying.

You need to start fast. Virtual servers are delivered instantly.

Backup matters to you. Daily automatic backup is free on virtual server plans; the virtualisation layer does it at the machine level.

Choose a dedicated server if…

You need a graphics card. This is the most common reason our customers choose a dedicated server, and here the decision is not open to debate: a graphics card cannot be added to a virtual server. The card is a physical component installed on the machine’s motherboard; it is not served over the virtualisation layer. If you’ll run rendering, AI inference, video processing or a game client, a dedicated server is the only option. You can see the available models on our GPU server page.

Your load runs at full capacity continuously. Render farms, video encoding, scientific computing, large databases running 24/7. The shared model gains you nothing here; you’re already using the whole machine.

Performance consistency is critical. On a dedicated server another customer’s load can never affect you under any condition. For game servers and real-time applications, where a sudden spike in latency reaches the user directly, this is decisive.

You need very high memory. Large databases and enterprise applications can require hundreds of GB of memory. Our dual-socket Xeon systems go up to 512 GB.

You’ll build your own virtualisation infrastructure. If you want to run ESXi or Proxmox on top and create your own virtual machines, there has to be real hardware underneath.

Three common mistakes

1. Assuming “a dedicated server is always faster.” It isn’t. A virtual server running on a new-generation processor easily outruns a five-year-old dedicated server. What matters is not the virtual/physical split but the generation and clock speed of the hardware underneath.

2. Buying big from the start. Renting three times the server you need “because we’ll grow anyway” means paying for idle capacity for months. On a virtual server, starting small and upgrading is always cheaper; when you genuinely run short, it scales up in a few minutes.

3. Looking only at the vCPU count. Two servers with 8 vCPU are not identical. Processor generation, clock speed, memory type (DDR4 or DDR5) and whether the disk is NVMe make more difference in most workloads than the core count.

If you can’t decide

Start with a virtual server.

The reason is simple: on a virtual server the cost of a wrong decision is low. If resources fall short you upgrade the plan; if you realise you genuinely need a dedicated server, you switch. But if you start with a dedicated server and find it’s more than you need, you’ve overpaid for months.

The only way to learn your real resource needs from real data is to run the system and watch it. A virtual server running for a month gives you an answer no estimate ever could.
